TV REVIEW | THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SEASON 2

15 | 1h | Action, Adventure, Comedy | TV Series (2019– )

Season One of 'The Umbrella Academy' was an obnoxious ride of bonkers characters and set pieces. Season Two jumps on that same mental train with this family of misfits and brings a whole new madness to the screen.

This season could've fallen into the trap of a repeat of its predecessor, but even though it has similar tropes and story, it manages to step away from season one and build upon it, throwing more of this universe in your face.

The separation of the main characters from the start sets up their own arcs. Some characters that we have not seen much of get put to the forefront of the screen and new characters get eased in, each with their own purpose. The family are getting the band back together, but not intentionally. At times these chance meetings feel like this could've happened sooner but apart from that are almost natural.

The series has everything from interesting love stories to unexpected twists. All of these are worked into the convoluted spider web of a story line, all of which leading to the same goal. The creators have incorporated a lot into the 10 episode series, but it never feels crammed or forced.

Now the comic book readers may of already known what came in episode 9 and theorist would've speculated, but the shock factor for those outside that band is there for all to witness, a twist you'd never see coming.
