If you’re looking for a feel-good, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with a fresh take on love and destiny then Picture This is the perfect pick. Directed by Prarthana Mohan and penned by acclaimed author Nikita Lalwani, this film boasts a stellar ensemble cast, sharp writing, and plenty of swoon-worthy moments.

The story surrounds Pia, AKA Pee-Pee (Simone Ashley, Sex Education), a fiercely independent London-based photographer with no interest in getting married and starting a family - something her family can’t understand. With her sister, Sonal’s (Anoushka Chadha) wedding on the horizon, her mother Laxmi (Sindhu Vee) is determined to see Pia coupled up. So she decides to throw her into an unexpected romantic experiment. After a spiritual guru predicts that she’ll find “the one” within her next five dates, her family wastes no time setting her up on increasingly chaotic encounters. What follows is a whirlwind of awkward, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt moments as Pia navigates her love life under the watchful eyes of her family.

From the first scene, Picture This is filled with energy and maintains this pace throughout its 136-minute runtime. Pia losing a shoe had me giggling and these giggles didn’t stop. There are plenty of funny moments making this rom-com memorable and one you’ll want to watch again and again.

While it embraces classic tropes such as misunderstandings, grand romantic gestures, and ridiculous dating disasters, Picture This also injects a modern and culturally rich twist. The film beautifully explores the complexities of balancing independence, tradition, and family expectations while keeping the laughs coming.

Simone Ashley brings her signature charisma and wit to the role, making Pia a lead worth rooting for. Her comedic timing is spot-on, and she perfectly balances the film’s humour with moments of vulnerability. Luke Fetherston shines as Jay, her best friend and business partner, and provides some of the movie’s most comedic and heartfelt scenes. They have compelling chemistry together; I’d be surprised if they’re not best friends in real life. And then there’s Hero Fiennes Tiffin, whose role in Pia’s love story adds just the right amount of romantic intrigue. The whole ensemble cast elevates the film with natural and effortlessly engaging performances.

Visually, the film makes great use of its London setting, with picturesque cityscapes and cosy, vibrant interiors that add warmth to the storytelling. The cinematography is crisp, colourful, and stylish, matching Pia’s profession as a photographer and subtly reinforcing the theme of capturing life’s unpredictable moments.

The ending might be predictable, but that doesn’t mean it’s not effective. It’s a happy, hopeful, and heart-stirring end to a very enjoyable film.

With its winning cast, witty dialogue, and a story that’s fresh but familiar, Picture This is a rom-com worth adding to your watchlist. Whether you’re in the mood for a light-hearted escape or a film that reminds you that love sometimes arrives in the most unexpected ways, this one delivers. So get yourselves over to Prime Video. It’s the must-watch rom-com of the year!
