Get ready for a dark comedy murder mystery this festive season, with Laa Marcus’ latest film Glass Casa. Starring Lizet Benrey, Harley Bronwyn, Nicole Clifford, and Geri Courtney-Austein, Glass Casa is one night of dramatic antics, with themes of friendship, self-discovery, and being honest with yourself.
All Jamie wants is a low-key relaxed bachelorette party with her best friends and pregnant sister, but their night takes an unexpected turn when an unwanted guest is discovered in their house, dead. Turning their celebrations into a murder mystery, the four friends now must navigate the murder while tripping on some old drugs and dealing with their secrets.
Glass Casa starts with a fast montage of weird and wonderful clips from spiders to glass breaking, with a little girl's voiceover. It’s high energy and sets the tone for the movie. The film is well-shot, with decent locations and lighting; which is very impressive for an indie film. The house they shoot in, for the majority of the film, is beautiful, it’s like something from Selling Sunset.
The comedy is great, better, and more believable than I thought it would be - nothing too zany or cheesy, but just enough to be amusing. The characters are fun and the actors have strong chemistry, complementing one another equally. Everyone has perfect timing, expressive faces, and a range of tones and voices. Geri Courtney-Austein who plays Evie, is a stand-out with her quirky character that she plays effortlessly.
It’s a busy plot, but it is entertaining and will keep you invested and guessing. When the girls find the body they realise they’re locked in this house, finding mysterious threatening notes, and then a stranger comes in to help them and reveal the history of this beautiful glass house. To solve the riddle, the girls gather all the notes, hold a séance, and more. Basically, this is a script that screams “Just go with it”.
There are some whacky and whimsical parts to this film, such as when the girls hide the body/murder from Jamie’s fiancé, leading to Evie simulating sex with the dead body - a ridiculous but hilarious scene.
The team begins to realise that Jamie’s horror script is coming to life, so who would do this and why? With twists, turns, and secrets, the end of the film isn’t predictable and I was compelled to find out who had done it and what was going on.
Jamie's fiancé gets the blame for the stalking, notes, and disappearances, and without giving too many spoilers, his character is a psycho. In true murder mystery style, everything is revealed by the killer in the final scene. With a dramatic end, the script stays strong and everything falls into place.
Glass Casa invites you to a fun and frightening night with this hilariously dark whodunnit. With a strong pace, great acting, and an engaging story, it’s a must-see for murder mystery fans.
