Colourblind

Writer, director, and actor, Nathan Hill brings the sexy, seductive, old Hollywood-style film 'Colourblind'.

Synopsis

Similar to his previous film ‘Jasper’ the story follows an unenthusiastic private investigator, Jaffy, who is hired to track down a suspected suicidal girl. The twist, the woman who he’s hired by, is also being investigated by Jaffy’s old PI friend from the past. Something clearly happened between them, and audiences are taken on a journey to find out what.

Review

'Colourblind' has some decent acting, from Hill, Ian Rooney, and Jane Badler. Hill’s character is colourblind (fitting title) as he shares that he sees the world differently. So when he begins to see Sia, the woman he’s investigating, in colour, he knows he’s fallen in love.

Unlike its predecessor, 'Colourblind' has a far more serious tone. We see more of Jaffy investigating, than sleeping with every woman he meets and fighting every man that crosses his path. But fear not, in true NH style, this film has plenty of seductive sequences, dramatic encounters, and emotional turmoil.

The storyline is easy to follow and somewhat predictable, but there’s far more depth, and more levels to this story, which are intriguing. The side characters are strong, so it’s not all just about Jaffy.

The opening sequence is beautifully presented, in black and white with alluring jazz music, it’s a calming and compelling start. 'Colourblind' is well shot overall, with a good mixture of close-ups and tracking shots. Dramatic, orchestral music, shaded lighting, and dark-coloured costumes make for an intriguing watch.

Towards the end Jaffy is looking for forgiveness, saying he’s paid for his crimes. He chases Sia, declaring his affections for her. Jaffy tells her he’s beginning to see in colour, because of her, that’s why he knows she’s the one. But this doesn’t stop her from getting on a plane and leaving. With a black eye and a limp, Jaffy drags his way to the end of this job, and the film. We watch a broken Jaffy go to a brothel where women parade in front of him, but none of them are good enough as they’re not Sia.

The final scene is hopeful, as Jaffy walks by a sunset, he gets a phone call from Sia. This is open-ended though, so maybe there’s another story to follow for Jaffy.

'Colourblind' is an intriguing, well crafted and well acted story with themes of self-discovery, identity, family, grief, mental illness and confronting your past. If you’re a viewer who enjoys BBC crime dramas, or daytime dramas then you’ll enjoy watching this.
