The San Francisco star comedian Ali Wong is back on Netflix with her fourth original comedy special, Single Lady. The special was directed by Wong, who also serves as executive producer alongside John Irwin. With a runtime of 59 minutes, this special is an easy, funny, honest watch.
Performing to an ecstatic crowd at L.A.’s Wiltern Theatre, Wong is here to kiss and tell as she opens up about getting back on the dating scene after divorcing her husband of 10 years in 2022, “All these men are after my divorced-mom energy”. She’s not shy about sharing her dating stories, which include a 60-year-old who screamed when he climaxed and a white guy who couldn’t tell a teacup from a rice bowl.
Now, hard Wong fans will know the star has been in a public relationship with actor Bill Hader since last year, and Wong alludes to this throughout the hour without name-dropping - so respectful. As a fan of Hader's, I was ready for some hilarious stories about them, as he is also a fun character.
What is nice about this set is Wong’s positive, fun, view she has on divorce. This set isn’t about complaining or man-bashing but instead, it’s about finding new love, dealing with dating and children, and showing how middle-aged women still have it all. She exclaims to her audience “Look how much fun I’m having,” and not in a sarcastic, sad way.
The set design reminds me of a Charlotte Tilbury stand in John Lewis - not a bad thing but I wonder if she’s a fan of their makeup. Nice, subtle pinks, with a shimmer and shine, and a fanned arch that helps fill the large space on the stage.
In her previous sets, Wong has had a flamboyant, bright dress code - usually filled with animal prints. In this special, she’s opted for a long, white, flowing dress. Does this symbolise virginity, marriage, a ghost, or a nightgown - as she describes? Either way, there’s a lot you can read into with this wardrobe choice, but whatever you want to believe, she looks fresh and comfy.
Her style of comedy is fun, vibrant, fierce energy, and tailored to a more female audience, but there are plenty of guys who’ll appreciate her jokes and insight. Her storytelling technique is what keeps the audience on their toes, laughing from one part to another. Ali Wong has such a sweet presence and energy I don’t know how anyone couldn’t like her. I’d love to go for cocktails and talk about life with her.
Overall, Single Lady isn’t a how-to guide, but a fun testimonial of a middle-aged divorcee millionaire. If you’re a fan of Ali Wong and want more to watch, you can find her previous specials Don Wong, Hard Knock Wife, and Baby Cobra, as well as her Emmy-winning performance in the drama series BEEF, on Netflix.
