We are just over 2 months away from one of this year’s most anticipated films: 28 Years Later - arriving 18 years after 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, fans of the franchise have been eagerly awaiting a blood soaked follow third entry and director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have re-teamed to deliver what is set to be one of the most intense cinematic experiences of the year.
In this vignette - released by Sony Pictures - we see the pair discussing the importance and thought process that went into visualising then producing what exactly this world would look like 28 years after the ‘Rage Virus’ was unleashed. “How does the rest of the world respond?”, “Has the country been quarantined and essentially abandoned?” These are the questions Garland faced when penning the script. Boyle elaborates by emphasising just how ruthless survival is in this world and how humans will survive with a “lack of machinery, no fuel or electricity. Everything that surrounds our lives now has become useless.”
The ‘infected’ get the bloody spotlight shined upon them as well, with Boyle describing them as “extraordinary creatures” and Garland emphasising that these are “living people that have got sick” and when it came to the design of their appearance, the influence of wildlife and just how they survived for 28 years with this condition.
“When you're doing a movie. You are looking for those images that will terrify people. There’s a visceral element to cinema where you have a responsibility to push the envelope as far as you can go.”
It’s a hell of a statement from the director and having seen the trailers I think (and hope) that he and Garland will deliver. We will find out in June!
